Advancing Circular Leather Through Material Research

Research Cooperation with LASRA

Circularity starts with materials. At Nera, innovation in tanning chemistry goes hand in hand with data driven research and material design. In cooperation with the LASRA scientific team, we have published a peer‑reviewed article in the Journal of the American Leather Chemists Association (JALCA), April 2026, entitled “Hydrolysis of Zeolite‑Tanned Leather Shavings.”
This study focuses on understanding how Zeology‑tanned leather shavings behave beyond their initial industrial use, providing valuable insight into future circular applications.

Designing Leather Shavings for Circular Economy Pathways

A key challenge in the circular economy is ensuring that production residues, such as leather shavings, remain suitable for recovery and valorisation. The JALCA study investigates how chrome‑free Zeology‑tanned leather shavings respond to controlled hydrolysis.
The results highlight how upstream tanning choices directly influence downstream options, supporting long‑term circular economy strategies for materials such as leather.

Chrome‑Free Collagen Hydrolysate with Potential Value

During hydrolysis of Zeology‑tanned leather shavings, collagen is released into the hydrolysate, while the zeolite‑based tanning minerals largely remain in the solid fraction.
Importantly, the resulting collagen hydrolysate is free from chrome, heavy metals, and aldehydes. This distinguishes it from many conventional leather waste streams and opens perspectives for investigating its potential agronomic value, subject to further technical validation and regulatory assessment.

Ongoing Cooperation and Future Outlook

This publication illustrates Nera’s commitment to circular leather development through collaborative research. Ongoing cooperations continue to explore how Zeology‑tanned leather can contribute to responsible resource use, waste valorisation, and circular economy solutions for future materials.
